“MOTOWN REMIXED”
The label that launched the true soul sound of the ‘60’s this has finally joined the millennium trend with an official remix album- and the effect instant!
Appropriately, it opens with The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back – okay, it’s an adaption, but being sensitively styled by New York’s star duo, the Thievery Corporation, this turns on the tap.
Then, showered with the nostalgic warmth of classics like Gladys Knight’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, and Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours”, one remembers the days of ‘real songwriting’.
Add the invigorating treatment of current groove masters, including DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope, King Britt and Lionel Sanchez, who’s refreshing remix of The Supremes, gives even Diana Ross an added glow!
Overall it’s a warm, uplifting experience and the flow is almost unabated – the only real irritation being the insipid addition of a bland beat on Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On”. If you’re arrogant enough to mess with such perfection, rather totally re-arrange it – but please don’t fiddle with a master!
Also irksome is the Groove Boutique’s clumsiness, making Smokey Robinson’s “Quiet Storm” a wasted ending.
